Research
My dissertation was on fan videos, or fanvids. Fanvids, clips and/or images from media such as television and film remixed to music insome sort of narrative message, are a gauge for the diffusion of cultural narratives and cultural meaning. The process of interpretation occurs both through the presentation of images and themes within the fanvid and through the online discourse vids invite. Essentially, I looked at the ways fan communities (and fans themselves) share, create, negotiate, and transform meanings.
I am also revising a few papers currently based my dissertation and prior research:
“It’s Only Fun When It Hurts”: The Acceptance of Narratives of Sexualized Violence in Fandom
Within this paper, I will specifically discuss the fan transformation of narratives regarding sexualized violence. This article seeks to further our understanding of how audiences are receiving these narratives and how they then go on to express those narratives to others. By looking at the chance of themes from canon to fanvid, particularly surrounding sexuality, sexual identity, and expressions of love, arousal, and caring, we can see the way the messages and conceptual linking of sex and violence is being expressed within fan communities.
Shots to the canon: The emergence of interpretation in online fanvid discourse
Fanvids, clips and/or images from media such as television and film remixed to music in some sort of narrative message, are a gauge for the spread of cultural narratives and cultural meaning. The process of interpretation occurs both through the presentation of images and themes within the fanvid and through the online discourse vids invite. This paper investigates the transmission of meaning through the presentation of and discussion about two fanvids that are specifically critical of narratives surrounding gender and sexuality within the original media sources.
